In their final studio session together, master musicians Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté recorded this intense and moving collection of songs.
This album is like bathing in a warm pool imbued with magical, healing powers that are diffused through lives lived and lessons learned. It’s an acoustic encounter between two Malian master musicians of different generations where the modern sensibilities flow in unison with the echoes of the ancient Manding empire. The loping, muscular rhythms born on the banks of the Niger and the edge of the desert join with the carefully honed and sophisticated sounds of the Mande Griot tradition. In the album liner notes, which are deeply personal, quietly illuminating and a pleasure to read, both kora master, Toumani Diabaté, and album producer, Nick Gold, allow us valuable access to the raison d’etre and vibe behind what was sadly to be Ali Farka Touré’s last recording. It’s not the physical pain that Ali was clearly in that comes through the grooves of this album, it’s the sense of pride in the tradition combined with a more gentle, reflective and effortlessly intuitive energy. Listening to the kora it’s hard to believe that it’s just one man playing, flowing like the Niger itself through these evocative songs. And Toumani is totally in sync with the man he describes as a multi dimensional musical phenomenon, a pioneer of music, a trainer, a historian, a marabout and a healer. Apart from a smattering of percussion and a little extra vocals added by Ali’s son Vieux Farka Touré, Souleye Kane and Ali Magasa, and the ghostly presence of the late, great Cuban bassist Orlando 'Cachaito' Lopez on five songs, this is Ali and Toumani’s show. The setting is warm, intimate and intense and according to Toumani this set of songs was created “for our pleasure first of all, for the pleasure of our families, and for the pleasure of all those who would listen to it”. And for that we have to give thanks.
